Eye Health - Supplements that you need.
Nutrition for eyes
Good nutrition is important to keep your eyes healthy and functioning their best throughout your lifetime. Two very important eye nutrients that may reduce your risk for macular degeneration and cataracts have names you may not be familiar with.
Eye disease is on the rise – especially for older Americans. We need healthy eyes, our modern medicine can only offer us toxic drugs and expensive surgeries – never a real solution. The AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study)really brought this issue to the forefront.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Poor nutrition, vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, arteriosclerotic changes that come with not-so-good lifestyle decisions and heavy metal toxicity, definitely play a role in damaging your vision. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are types of carotenoids , which are found widely in vegetables and other plants.
Preventing degeneration and vision loss
With advancing age, the eye loses valuable antioxidants – including inositol, vitamin C and glutathione. Respected Doctors like, Dr. Kondrot (America’s eye Doctor) claims that that the levels of glutathione in the lens may actually decrease until they are 4 to 14 times lower than levels experienced in youth. He believes in homeopathic remedies that could avoid cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can actually lead to macular degeneration, he says, and should only be used as a last resort. There is solid scientific research supporting the use of nutritional supplements.
Archives of Ophthalmology research suggests those diets include high amounts of good foods containing lutein, zeaxanthin and other carotenoids have a lower chance of getting cataracts than with lower amounts of these nutrients. We know cooked spinach (not raw) is one of the best natural food sources of lutein and zeaxanthin. Listen to mom.

In a survey of Americans aged 45-65, more than half said they take nutritional supplements to protect joints, heart health and bones. Less than 20% said they take eye health supplements. Remember the eyes!
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are found in high concentrations in the macula of the human eye, giving the macula its yellowish color. Both appear to have important antioxidant functions. Other nutrients we need include vitamin C, beta-carotene and vitamin E. All help with damaging effects of free radicals – the damaging molecules that can destroy cells and play a role in ill-health.
In nature, Lutein and Zeaxanthin seem to absorb excess light energy to prevent damage to plants from too much sunlight, especially from high-energy light rays called blue light.
Lutein Bonus : Aside from eye and vision benefits, lutein may help protect against atherosclerosis (fatty deposits in arteries), the disease that leads to most heart attacks.
Supplements
Eating a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables usually is the better (best actually) way to get the important eye nutrients you need. But if you are not getting enough nutrients in your diet, consider supplementing.
A popular formula for eyes/ supplement is Optimal Eyes . You can also take Lutein-only supplements.
There are no known toxic side effects of taking too much lutein or zeaxanthin.
But we always advise you do your research, or consult with your Health coach, practitioner or Doctor.
